fast train

If you are going to stay at Claridge's, I suggest a stay longer than 20 hours in London. Anyway, catch the Eurostar at Waterloo Station.

It goes dark. That's the chunnel. It doesn't take long to get through it, distracted by wine and conversation.

The train really goes fast when you get to France. I love the Eurostar!

Gare du Nord. The quick tour: Eiffel Tower, streets of Paris. Stiffling bus.

Hotel Meurice. Dress for dinner. Walk in the Tuileries and get chalky dust on black dress shoes. A drink in the bar from a waiter who looks drawn by Guy Buffet.

Hotel Meurice's dining room is incredibly ornate. But the set 'tour group' menu and the guide picking Sauvignon Blanc and Gamay served cold for wines spoils the moment. The lobster gazpacho was good, though.

Retire to the bar. I have an espresso and an armagnac. Finally it's just me and Earl. We discuss psoraisis and back problems.

If it were my trip design, I could do better by it. But when would I get to stay in such allegedly first class hotels and ride on the Eurostar? Not to mention a stiffling tour bus.

And Paris is a woman's town, with flowers in her hair."
