Tastes of the dark side of chocolate.

Making a dessert of it.

The expert.

chocolate, wine, food and friends

A day to socialize with various friends. Our friend Pam is writing a book on dark chocolate. Part of the book is a how-to for a tasting procedure. So it had to be tested. Deb, Sam, Deanna, SuRu, FFP, LG and I are the guinea pigs. We didn't really know what to expect. I'm not a chocoholic. Far from it, really. But what fun we had. We had tastes of different dark chocolates as follows:

Lindt -- 49%
Callebaut -- 53.6%
Valrhona -- 66%
El Rey -- 70%
Fauchon -- 70%
Dolfin -- 70%

Then whatever we didn't consume in the tasting was melted in the microwave for us and then we got matchstick orange peal, coffee beans, candied ginger, pound cake, pear and apple to dip in it. I broke out a 1994 Bin 407 Penfold's Cab at that point to test the 'cabernet and chocolate' theory. Yum. A good time was had by all. It's wonderful when you have someone who really studies a topic so much until they are totally immersed.

I passed out little presents that I got out of the present stash I keep in the closet. I don't really do gifts unless I feel like it. Sam particularly enjoyed his punching Godzilla. Some people are soooo easy!

I took a gift to the neighbors across the street and they showed me a gift they got...a radio-controlled blimp. Very cool. I'd seen them in catalogs but I had no idea how cool it really was.

Our friend Allan invited us over for dinner in the evening. This round of socialization has been such good fun. Not having to work and rush home from work and such made it all the more pleasurable.

Allan and another guest and FFP and I enjoyed wonderful wine and traditional French food at an elegantly set table. A great conclusion of a stunning day.
