"The older you get, the more you get to be like yourself"

Ida Davidoff, an Expert on Aging, quoted in The New York Times on the occasion of her death at age 97, as quoted by Betty Friedan in her book "The Fountain of Age."

never needed another day more

I slept hard and pretty late for me. Things are getting to me more than they should. Must try to put them in perspective.

I do some of the things I wanted to do, read a little bit of the paper and invite some old friends over. And my parents. We have a cold supper of salad and cheese. It's hot outside, maybe the hottest day of the season so far. 'Boil the inside of a car left in the open' hot.

It's a nice evening. It's been a long time since we've seen Rose. She's just the same, it seems. She hugs the dog, loves the house and garden, enjoys the food and enjoys a book I show her of Paris shop windows.

We watch Casablanca. A couple of folks haven't seen it. My mom claims she hasn't though she knows the music. I always notice something new in it. A new shading, a new phrasing. Bogart isn't that great an actor, someone says. No, not really. But the movie is great.

When everyone is gone I wash the plates and glasses and fill the dishwasher. I polish off the wine. I feel more myself than I have in the last couple of weeks. Friends and food and wine will do that.
