"But for me the key attainment of modern science has been the discovery of the three immensities-time, space and human ignorance."

Timothy Ferris in The Three Immensities...article in special Forbes ASAP edition on Time, November 30, 1998

image is everything

I am guilty of it. Trying to develop a fun theme. Passing out toys. The toys are raffled. I don't put a ticket in, deferring to my colleagues who have fewer toys. Someone puts one in for me, but I don't win. The guy in charge of a large group of people says 'image is everything' and exalts the trinkets at a trade show. And talks about more important things, too, of course. I am thinking that some of his info means that an old idea of mine is suddenly more interesting. One is always way too enamoured of one's own ideas, I find. I'm as guilty as anyone.

I try to work hard in and around the meeting. I eat the free fajitas. I don't take the pecan pie but go back for the second fajita and more queso. I have exploded with free food of late.

I get a little distracted in the afternoon, trying to work with someone else but going off to look at people's photos or to show off my new knowledge of Fireworks graphics. It's Friday afternoon. It's a weekend! Friday night is the best part of the weekend because you have high hopes to get things done but you can just goof off because you have two more whole days.

SuRu is back from Australia so we all three go to Zoot. They have a fixe prix menu for 'pre-theater' that includes a starter, entrée and dessert. Some of the starters look great. I talk them into chilled asparagus soup with house smoke salmon and lemon oil, lemongrass/ginger pork dumplings with sweet-sour apricot sauce and a salad of watercress and gogonzola with balsalmic mascerated cherries. The chees for dessert, you see. Three apps again.

The chilled soup is good. Almost cold enough. No bitterness that asparagus can sometimes give. The smoken salmon and lemon oil the perfect foil. The dumplings are great. And I enjoy the cheese while SuRu and FFP have a lemon-rosemary bread pudding. We've taken a bottle of French wine and the whole effect is a cool respite from a hot Friday night.

We spend a bit of time in the Wherehouse store looking at DVDs. We buy 'Maltese Falcon' and 'Key Largo' and take them home. We watch 'Key Largo.' I still think 'African Queen' and 'Casablanca' are my favorite Bogies.

It wasn't a productive day. But it was a pleasant one. And that's what counts, isn't it?
