cold and rainy

The day is cold and rainy. They have threatened to turn off the water at work to allow the city to fix a fire hydrant that was run over by a car last Thursday. It is an 'emergency' we have to understand. Hmmm..so they wait days and then have to do it during the workday? In fact. they never do it. Too cold and rainy for 'emergencies?' Ah, well, so going to work is not so pleasant on this cold and rainy day.

We have a customer call. Our crew, a bevy or good managers and directors (yep we have 'em), does a great job.

I work. I attend another meeting. I do lots of review and reading and answering e-mail and, at the end of the day, I don't feel I've accomplished too much. I eat lunch at the office. Guess what? Nachos. But I purposely try to fill the plate less full of chips and therefore eat less. Later I have a triangle of Laughing Cow cheese. I'm on the all cheese diet.

When I get home, the bonus room is full of books. FFP has hired someone to empty a book case and move it. The next step is to move a heavy, antique dresser in its place and then move a TV stand and the big TV we had repaired in its place in our bedroom. The bookcase is now in the guest room and is getting refilled. Of course, we have to figure out what to do with a coffee table and the stuff piled on it. All in all, a bunch of futile rearrangement but I think the only way to control your possessions is to keep moving them around! Anybody need an oak coffee table? I think I'll figure out something to keep it...maybe by moving some other stuff around. Did I mention that I feel like I spend all my time rearranging stuff?

I have a salad of baby spinach left over from the party and some of the leftover sauce on bread. And, um, some cheese.

I spend a fair amount of time fooling with some backup scripts and investigating odd behavior on the computers on my network. Very strange stuff. At the end of the day, I have the scripts working, though, and have figured out what I want to do.

I have been having a hankering to get a new computer and some wireless networking gear. But I have been halted by: (1) not knowing what I want exactly; and (2) not really wanting to install and arrange it. Money isn't really the point although prices are constantly falling.

I read today's newspapers and struggle with the crossword puzzle in the New York Times. Yeah, and it's only Tuesday. I watch a documentary about a 1920's and '30's star who was ousted from movies because of an openly gay lifestyle (William 'Billy' Haines) and then I watch an old Law and Order episode.

JUST TYPING
I get things done.
When I must.
And the rest of the time.
I seem to drift.
But really.
Is it all a random preparation.
This work.
Is not like cleaning house.
A trail of completion.
Dusted surfaces, washed dishes.
It's a work of breakthroughs.
Of understanding.
Of exploring dead ends so that you can post the sign 'no outlet.'
