still life from LB's shelf

"Attention to health is the greatest hindrance to life."
Plato

It is not enough to be happy; it is necessary, in addition, that others not be.

I don't have a single meeting today. I start my day at the parents' house trying to work through Mom's pain. The doc has her on an anti-viral again. He gave Dad samples for five days and a script for the other five. There is controversy about the pepper creams for post-herpetic neuralgia. But I think it's worth a try. She likes heat on it. She has a burn on her arm to proof it from falling asleep on the heating pad.

Even stopping at my parents, filling out medical information forms for them, worrying over my mom, I don't get to work too late. And I work hard on my task. People drop by to discuss things, write e-mails to me. I take these interruptions. But I focus on my tasks. I just wish they were more concrete.

Peter Pan flies! That was the fascination with that story wasn't it? Ballet Austin does Peter Pan and the effect of bancers and wires is exhilerating. The dog and alligator are played by a large young man with a crew cut and they are pretty fun, too. 'Tick, tock, tick, tock,' the orchestra says. Yuck, yuck. NeverNeverLand indeed...I'm a kid at heart. There were lots of kids there, actually, but everyone enjoyed it. At the backstage party, they served chicken nuggets, carrot and celery spears and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. "Kids food," said one of the ballet employees. "We get it," said we.

At home we sat in front of the TV. I marvel at a 1987 movie called Heat with Burt Reynolds and a very young Peter MacNicol in it on cable. Not that the movie is good, just that they look interesting so young. It makes me realize that he was Stingo in Sophie's Choice which I forget somehow. He was so, so young in that one. My age when I married Forrest young. Time flies. I eat some cookies we got as a souvenir last night, made by the pastry guy at Fonda. Very delicious. And drink tea.

JUST TYPING
Taking control.
Deciding things.
Doing them.
Forgetting them.
Pretending to be in the driver's seat.
When, at best.
We are passengers on a tour bus.
With a broken microphone and a guide speaking three other languages.
