a certain calm

When you dedicate yourself to a potentially boring of visiting, it is actually sort of fun.

It's all in the attitude. I'd decided that, after a good workout, I'd dedicate myself to these four old folks. For a day. And it felt right and true. The kind of thing I'd hoped retirement would allow.

While we played games I just tried to win, laughed at the jokes, lost gracefully and kept score. And did my share of the teasing and nostalgia reveries.

While I escorted my aunts around the store, I just looked at things, didn't imagine wanting much, thought my thoughts, listened to their stories.

It should have been an exceedingly boring day but it's all in the attitude.

we had this brilliant idea to get a bookcase built in for this little wasted space...and I think it will look good when installed and painted

JUST TYPING

You can be bored.
Or you can be prepared for certain things.
Embrace them.

Time flies....

I want to visit with my relatives as they are leaving tomorrow. I get after my workout pretty early. I am, in fact, in the club before FFP leaves. I shower there and put on jeans and such for a casual day with them.

When I arrive at my dad's they are still snacking their way through breakfast and coffee. I join in.

We watch some TV and talk and eventually play some more of the domino game and go for a late lunch at Luby's. My aunts want to go looking at antiques but the guys want to snooze. So we go back and I take the aunts in my car. It's raining but we go to one of those antique malls and we wander for quite a while inside. One aunt and I even buy a couple of things.

It's cocktail hour when we get back. After a while, I drive my uncle's car to the station to gas up and we get a couple of Schlotzsky's to go with various leftovers they've collected from their meals the last couple of day.

We clear the table and go back to playing dominoes. We say that we'll be tired of this game for a while. But it felt like a lot of fun to play it with them, joking and teasing each other.

I go home. I can't seem to get into anything at home. I can't make myself do the journal and finally I just read a little newspaper while watching a bit of TV. Then bed.

It's a Tangled
Web we weave...these
days of our lives.

One year ago
"I feel very tired for some reason. Perhaps I had too much bad chain food and too much nostalgia."

Two years ago

"Emerging after being sick is an interesting thing. Euphoric delusion....I enjoyed what I could eat, didn't overindulge in any one wine. I felt bad seeing some champagne and Graves in my glass go undrunk, but such is the life of restraint in the land of plenty".
