a winter wonderland?

We don't see snow much in Austin. It amazes people if some falls and especially if it sticks for a few hours.

FFP looked outside first. "It really snowed," he said.

Chalow found it disconcerting as she lowered herself on the path to urinate like a girl dog. She ran right back in before I could take her picture in the snow, the traditional thing to do.

There was already slush and lots of dripping.

My dad called. "Are you up?"

"Yes."

"Did you see the winter wonderland?"

"Yeah, it really snowed. It was just drizzle when we came home, late."

Later he called to say that his sister in Dallas said it snowed four inches there and that they were staying in. Of course, they live in Maine in the spring and summer and fall. It wasn't much of a storm by their standards.

When I went to the club around 10:30 it was mostly melted everywhere but afterward I headed down Expo to the toy store and mailing store to send my great nephew's birthday stuff and someone had managed to make a snowman from dirty snow. It was about three feet high with sticks for arms.

At our party this evening people were talking about the snow in Dallas since two couples had come from Dallas that day. The roads were clear but the four to six inches of overnight accumulation was all the buzz. Northerners would laugh at us, huh?

And that does it. That was probably the extent of winter for us. (Not to tempt fate or anything.) Last freeze date in our zone is three weeks away. There are some trees blooming. Spring is near.

Winter wonderland, indeed.

JUST TYPING

Snow used to warm my heart.
So pretty.
Maybe an excuse.
To stay in.
Now I give it a nod.
I laugh at it.
Snow in Austin?
Silly.
Go away!
I say.
And it does.

Time flies....

We were up a little late, eightish. I finished up my journal from yesterday and was at the gym around 10:30. After the gym I went to the neighborhood toy store and got some books and puzzles and stuff for my great nephews and mailed them along with the book I made to my niece.

At home, I had a bite of lunch and then just goofed off. I talked to people on the phone and someone dropped by. I surfed the WEB. I considered starting to watch Pirates of the Caribbean or reading or something. FFP suggested we go shopping and we picked up a gift for our hosts tonight and a pair of bookends while cruising the highend shops on 35th near Mopac. When we got back I did several exciting things like read The Austin Chronicle and have a snack and clean lint out of the dryer vent outside (and clean the mud off my shoes after I did it). I finally showered and we argued (well, just discussed really) over what to wear. We had these instructions: "We were thinking "elegant casual." What does that mean? It means
ladies wear something a little dressy, but comfy (like slacks & cocktail-type top). Guys where something comfortable (preferably no
jeans), but jacket not required and certainly not a tie." Now I ask you: if I'm wearing a "cocktail-type top" which I presume to be one of these sparkly things that pass as black tie for me, do you think my hubby who loves to dress up wouldn't wear a jacket and a tie. So we decide that he'll dress up a little more (coat and tie).

The party is fun with a few people we know and several we don't, food, a band. They have a give-a-way involving Lotto tickets. I wish my ticket would win and then I could give the money away to some of my causes. I'm not willing to work to give money away but if I won it, well, then.

We get home and I go off to bed with my book.
