"I realized that by keeping his library intact, I had hopedI might be able to keep my father, who was then eighty-six, intact as well. It was a strategy unlikely to succeed."

Anne Fadiman, Ex Librus Confessions of a Common Reader

raining in the land of the giants

I awoke without realizing I'd been dreaming. A few minutes later when I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth, I realized I had been dreaming about dripping this and that on various clothing. I just suddenly thought of some clothing I'd stained and realized it was a dream because I didn't even own it. I've been dripping this and that on my clothes the last couple of days (OK...I'm ALWAYS doing that) so this dream isn't surprising. It was just weird the way I drifted back into dreamland which usually doesn't happen if I've been awake more than a moment.

It was pouring down rain on Mopac today on the way to work. Every vehicle anywhere near me was a van or SUV. These giants throw spray at about my Civic's windshield level. I like my new car, by the way. The insurance company has decided, we think, to total the old one. Like we said three weeks ago. They could have saved themselves towing and tear down, but no....

Received the Dell I ordered today. Except for the speakers. Pirated speakers from one of my machines and checked things. I configured it for our ISP for dial up (at her house) and connected it to the LAN year and downloaded a few files. I decided to limit the changes I made or the software I installed. I installed a Grand Slam Bridge Program. I did the Internet configuration. Rather than install Netscape, I got her mail into Outlook Express and set up the address book from her correspondence. So...I've already seen several mysterious errors and puzzles. But it works. Maybe it won't crash as much as that out 486 ThinkPad I've foisted on her (with 16MB of RAM running WIN 95). Maybe. The shopping experience with Dell was fairly pleasant except for the missing speakers.

Since I have this additional machine set up in here, my office is particularly messy. I'll move this one to Mom's shortly. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a desk for it. The one we ordered is backordered. It's always something.

I need to learn to sleep like a regular human being.
