"There are ideas that are ready-made even while they are just being worked out, even before they have been worked out."

Charles Péguy

knowing what to do

Go to sleep to a storm with lightning and thunder and lots of rain. The enchiladas at Dart Bowl treated FFP exceedinlgy poorly and I have a few wounds myself but don't feel too bad.

In my dreams, I'm going somewhere. I've rented a car to visit some relatives. Then I'm over and over late going to the airport and trying to find out if it's really OK because the flight is delayed. Then we are off to the airport. We transfer our stuff to a van some relatives have. There is a confusion of luggage. At the airport I'm waiting some more for a plane. My rent car is at the relative's house and I have the keys. My suitcase (which I can't describe) is in the rent car, I think. My relatives don't want to come to the airport, get the keys, go back and look. But they offer to buy me some clothes and bring them to the airport. It's very confusing.

The phone rings and it's the parents. It's 5:30AM. The storm has left them without power. FFP calls the city service.

I call before and after my shower. They still have no power but they have been to IHOP for breakfast and seen a city truck in their neighborhood.

It's Monday and I really am much better, thank you, and not suffering from any cold or malady. But I am not excited about work. The things I have to solve seem insurmountable.

Still, I feel good about my workday although I can't say that I accomplished great things. I am trying to do the job. I'm putting my best ideas, my best thoughts, into the effort. That should count for something. It's funny work we do.

At lunch, I call the parents. They've only had power about an hour but they put together a lunch and we visit.

I go home to a nice salad with chicken that FFP fixed. I drink a beer with it. Had a couple of beers in the last few days. Some times I forget how much I like beer. Later FFP goes to the store and gets these cookies I like. I manage to just eat two. They seem to really fill me up. Or maybe it was the beer!

TV watching included reruns of FFP's current favorite offerings: Ally Macbeal, Third Watch and Boston Public. At least I think they were all reruns. I probably wasn't watching when they ran and reran. Then an odd film about a bunch of different people, mostly women, whose lives intertwined but I missed the beginning and wouldn't remember the name except I looked it up on imdb...Things You Could Tell by Just Looking at Her.

It seems these days that I consume some things over and over. Remains of the Day (either watching our copy or one on TV) is one that has cropped up lately. I always notice something new. Hey, the other night we watched Who's Afraid of Virgnia Woolf? A great movie. Liz Taylor was some actress.
