the perfect day

I used to try to dream up the perfect day if money, time and fitness were not an object. This day came close to being that day.

I used to try to write it down so I could figure out what it was that I wanted. I would end up having to describe several typical days, of course, since I would want to do certain things only once in a while. Often, though, I would mention workouts, showers, tennis, a nice meal on a patio, sipping coffee while reading or writing.

Well, today, I went to the club and did water aerobics. After that I showered off the chlorine and got a cup of coffee and went out and sat in a chair by the pool and read my screenplay magazine. Then I went inside, did the recumbent bike, still reading. I did a bunch of my ab exercises and then I showered up and put on my tennis clothes. I drove over to Starbucks on Exposition, a place I usually avoid. I wanted to see what sort of people hung out there. I got a bagel. (Which they couldn't toast because they don't have a toaster! This is America's coffee shop. Hrmph.) Anyway, I sat on the patio and eavesdropped while two women discussed how Susan Dell runs her household. I wrote a little in my notebook and had my coffee and bagel.

Then I headed back to the club and went to the patio by the pro shop, read a bit and waited on the pro who was giving my lesson. I enjoyed the lesson which, at my request, concentrated on my forehand. Then we went up to the dining room patio and had a late lunch and I interviewed her for a guest column in FFP's spot in West Austin News.

At home, I worked on the piece until it was time for us to go down to the LBJ library for an event.

Except for the event (I'd have chosen a movie or reading or a nice meal out) I could have written down this day as the way I'd like to live my life. Some days anyway. Exercise, tennis, reading and writing. When I used to do that exercise, I would tell myself: "Well, you can't do that every day but you can certainly exercise and read and write and play tennis. Just try to do it." Sometimes I did. But rarely did a day live up to my expectations like this one.

Time flies....

After my 'day at the club' and my writing, described above, I showered (again!) and dressed and FFP and I went to a lecture on 'planned giving' sponsored by SafePlace. The speeches were painless enough but only because they were short. The rich and famous people read their speeches. Before the thing there was good wine and snacks and good conversation. I've already 'planned my giving.' (This is usually a euphemism for leaving charity something in your will.)

The spring weather and getting to do things around the club made my mood soar.

It's a Tangled
Web we weave...these
days of our lives.

One year ago
"We are lucky. So lucky. To be able to dine out. To be able to have our leisure. Well, mine anyway."

Two years ago
"I'm always struck by how much our parents seem to enjoy the good food in restaurants with nice sauces and baskets of fresh, interesting bread. We are spoiled. They don't go out as much as we."

I'm weighing on new scales in the bathroom and the balance beam at the club (with workout clothes and shoes) and sort of guessing where I really am.
