road trip

Something about going on the road. Even the boring road between here and Big D.

There are so many things going on this weekend that escaping almost seems logical. Just say no to the whole lot of it. Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival. (It has a magazine's name in front of it now. But I'm not pimping for them.) Texas Relays. Some home show at the convention center. Austin Fine Arts Festival. (The festival that used to be called Fiesta at Laguna Gloria which moved its date from May, when it always attracted rain, to April to always coincide with the Wine and Food. And moved its location downtown. And changed its name) Last, but not least, at seemingly always the same weekend as THCWFF: Spamarama. (OK, there's an ad for a Hormel potted meat.)

We had actually decided to purchase an preview entrance to the Fine Arts festival on Saturday morning and a lunch for the THCWFF. Then we found out that Ballet Austin would perform at SMU tonight. We cancelled our lunch (and got a refund because it was sold out) and decided to go to the Art festival deal and then take off on IH35. Yawn. And go to Dallas. We invited Dad to ride along and visit some relatives.

FFP decided to make a mix CD with Rhapsody and thereby entertain us on the road. Road trips always have a certain something that is nice. But the least nice one is probably this stretch of IH35.

However, there were wildflowers. The stretch of road was at its best. Which isn't great, no. But its best. And I read part of the way, while FFP drove, making the miles disappear.

Two things almost made the road trip too interesting. One, at 2222 and Shoal Creek someone ran the red light and FFP barely escaped getting creamed. Two, there were all kinds of emergency vehicles on the access road and there was an airplane there...the focus of attention! Glad I didn't see it landing on the access road or I would have thought we were walking too close to the line.

JUST TYPING

Road trip.
The feeling of escape.
From a plethora of activities.
And yet.
These days.
Home is so inviting.
With the bedroom suite, new adjustable bed, digital cable TV (with tunes), high speed Internet access, the Capresso, the blooming garden.
That escaping doesn't seem as enticing.
Still.
Every once in a while.
You just need to be someplace else.

Time flies....

I am up at seven or so. We shower, pack a few things, tidy up and get read to go to the Austin Fine Arts Festival pre-opening brunch.

The food was sort of rich and didn't sit too well with us. We went home and finished getting ready and picked up Dad. I sat in the back seat and read a screenplay until the Czech Stop while FFP drove. That went fast. Then I drove in to Dallas and found the hotel and dropped FFP off and took my Dad to my cousin's house where my aunt now lives in an apartment. Dad would visit her husband with her, who is in a nursing home.

FFP and I went to Mockingbird Station, shopped a little and got lunch and then we read and watched basketball and napped until time to dress and go find the venue and our tickets.

It was still early so we walked around and then went back, still before the house opened. We enjoyed the show even though we'd seen it before.

It was after ten when we left and we went to Cafe Brasil and had dinner with the late night crowd.

Soon after we were sleeping the foreshortened sleep of spring forward.

It's a Tangled
Web we weave...these
days of our lives.

I finished my review of my SXSW film from my highly specialized viewpoint.

One year ago
"I should enjoy my freedom, but sometimes it makes me nervous."

Two years ago
"Meetings. They fill up your day and, if you aren't careful, you will imagine you are doing something."
